Technique

The Anatomy of a Scrape

The scrape only works if the right part of the body does the work. We cannot scrape with the front delt, the pecs or the traps — that turns us square and kills our power. We scrape with the rear delts and the scapulas: back of the shoulder through the shoulder blade.

Red — never scrape with these
Green — this is our scrape
Back view — rear delts and scapulas in green, traps in red
Back ViewRear delts + scapulas = green. Traps = red.
Front view — front delts and pecs in red
Front ViewFront delts + pecs = red. Nothing on the front scrapes.
Top-down view — traps, front delts and pecs in red
Top-Down ViewTraps, front delts + pecs = all red from above.
The Picture

If the front of your shoulder or your chest is touching them first, you're square and you're pushing — not scraping. Get the back of the shoulder and the shoulder blade on, and the scrape does the work for you.
